Training Season is Here at Roots of Empathy!

We celebrate our volunteer Instructors who devote their time to deliver a year long Roots of Empathy program and to attend the four day training.  We train and support the staff of child care centres to bring the Seeds of Empathy program to their children. Both of our empathy programs have a baby as a teacher.  Our "Tiny Teachers" along with their parents provide a powerful model of empathy. The children, in finding the humanity in the baby, also find the humanity in themselves and others.

It's Hard to Learn When You're Being Bullied and Left Out

Bullying affects a high percentage of children, compromising their health, emotional well-being,  academic work, and is associated with long-lasting consequences continuing on into adulthood.

Our evidence-based classroom program works to counteract bullying, and inspire inclusion.

Orange Shirt Day - September 30th

On this day, Roots of Empathy is observing Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours survivors of residential schools and their communities, and is a day for Canadians to take part in learning the truth of our history with Indigenous communities as an important part of moving towards reconciliation. Read our Founder/President Mary Gordon's statement and suggestions on how to reflect on the Indigenous experience.

Reaching Before Teaching - A Message from Mary Gordon, Roots of Empathy Founder/President

With the pandemic came children’s loss of opportunities to develop socially and emotionally as they normally would if they were in their own classroom with their peers and teacher. We cannot expect children to be able to learn academically when they are socially and emotionally dysregulated. Teachers need to be supported.

We Measure What We Treasure

Read about how Roots of Empathy is committed to delivering empathy programs that children and teachers tell us work. During the last few years of challenging and isolating pandemic learning, Roots of Empathy not only followed children where they were doing most of their learning – online – we also measured what they thought about our virtual Roots of Empathy Recovery Program.

Are you Concerned About Children Relating to Others When They Return to School?

If you are – you are not alone. Research from the Ontario Teacher’s Federation indicates overwhelming concern – 89% of educators and 83% of parents are concerned about the “learning impact on relationships, given limited to no individual student-teacher interactions and peer interaction over the last 2 years..."
